Updates for my programs and websites

QText 2.50

Illustration

QText is improved once more. There are no bigger changes (I am holding them for 3.00 :)) but many will enjoy fixed text manipulation. It is shame to admit that multiline tabs were fundamentally broken for few versions now.

Finally there is upgrade procedure in place. It is not automatic but requires user interaction. I like it better that way but I am open for other suggestions.

Other notable changes include quite a few interface tweaks and bug-fixes.

Try it.

VHD Attach 3.00 Beta 2

Illustration

It is time for second 3.00 beta. You might have noticed that there was no post about first beta at all - I forgot to write it. :)

Most notable update for 3.00 is addition of virtual disk creation. It currently allows creating only dynamic disks but fixed disks will also be supported in future.

Setup is changed a little in order to offer selection of context-menu items before application is even started. That way you can use your favorite combination from first run.

Due to popular demand there is in-application check for upgrade. It will not check automatically but only upon user’s request. In next few weeks I will push few test upgrades so keep on checking.

There is lot of small cosmetic adjustments. Like switching focus to Explorer upon attaching Bit Locker drive or drag&drop support in main window. And lets not forget that those who love analyzing virtual disks just got few more details about VHD.

Download is available on VHD Attach beta page.

Network Attaching

Illustration

VHD Attach was designed with ease of use as first priority and as such it’s main use case was attaching virtual drives that are available on local disks. On other side, service uses Local system in order to simplify user’s setup procedure.

Unfortunate consequence of this is not being able to attach network drives that have any user restrictions. VHD Attach will attempt to attach network drive but only under guest credentials. If network location does not accept everyone attach will fail. As always there is workaround.

Easiest solution would be to go into Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Services and there find “VHD Attach” service. Right-clicking properties and then going to Log On tab will allow for service user change. Instead of Local System account selecting “This account” and filling your user data should do the trick.

After restart of service attaching from network location will work like a charm.

P.S. I am actively thinking about sorting this out without making things more complicated. Who knows, maybe it will be even fixed in next version. :)

VHD Attach 2.10 and a Little Bit More

VHD Attach 2.10 (final) is among us. This version brings read-only attaching as one big feature and a LOT of bug fixing as a side dish.

I would definitely recommend update to all who had issues with stability but beta enthusiasts might skip it altogether since first beta of 3.00 makes it’s debut.

This version brings improvements in setup area (you get to choose your context menu items during installation) and you can create virtual disk without trip to dreadful Computer Management.

Whether you decide upon stable version or go adventurous with beta I hope that you will enjoy it. :)

MagiWOL 3.00

Illustration

MagiWOL has moved to version 3.00.

Compared to version 2.21, changes are:

  • No registry writes will be performed if application is not installed.
  • Double-click now wakes computer instead of editing entry.
  • Broadcast address now can be host name (useful for waking over Internet).
  • Works with Citrix virtualization.
  • Brand new icon.
  • A lot of bug fixing.

Special thanks to all those among you who supported me with bug fixing and installed many wrong versions to make one right. :)

Download is available now.

VHD Attach 2.10 (Beta 1)

Illustration

VHD Attach in version 2.10 is mostly about fixing some hard to catch bugs. However, one feature sneaked in and justified this beta.

Finally there is an option of read-only attaching a virtual disk file. Really good feature for taking a quick look into virtual disk without risk of changing anything.

Version is available at https://www.medo64.com/vhdattach/beta/.

P.S. Final 2.10 version has no timeline since I do have to pay my bills and that kind of work takes priority. You can always donate some money to speed me up. :)

Seobiseu 1.10

Illustration

New version is here. Those missing restart option can now rejoice. Restart is available in both context menu on main screen and in notification area.

Download is available here.

P.S. Restart option is not on main menu itself since it makes it a little crowded.

Seobiseu

When I turn on my computer, I like for it to turn on fast. This usually means disabling unnecessary services with SQL Server being usually the one that slows startup the most. However, few of those services get used through out a day. Until now that meant dealing with services MMC snap-in and UAC prompts. Well, not any more.

Seobiseu is application that, once installed, allows starting and stopping services from user account. For that you have simple window interface and nice tray (“notification area”) menu.

The way it is done is via system service that proxies all requests from user land to service controller. While this does lower security a little, I deem it worthy compromise since service isn’t able to do anything other than start and stop operation.

P.S. Name is Korean translation of word service (phonetically read). It sounds nice to me and I do like quite a few things about South Korea so it seemed like perfect choice.

VHD Attach 2.00

Illustration

It took me a while but new version of VHD Attach is here. Although there isn’t much changed on surface, internals went through significant changes and quite a few bug-fixes.

Probably most visible change is adding auto-mount button directly on toolbar. It seems that lot of people were unaware of feature because it was buried in Options dialog.

Version is available at https://www.medo64.com/vhdattach/. Enjoy.

MagiWOL 3.00 (Beta 1)

Illustration

Although MagiWOL is not program that gets downloaded the most from these pages, it is definitely one that generates most of feedback. Good feedback from loyal users forced me to continue development and it is directly responsible for this beta.

Changes are:

  • No registry writes will be performed if application is not installed.
  • Double-click now wakes computer instead of editing entry.
  • Broadcast address now can be host name (useful for waking over Internet).
  • Lot of bug fixing.

Beta is available for download at https://www.medo64.com/magiwol/beta/.
